Weatherstripping
Will Keep The Elements Out
The quality of shelter has certainly
improved since the time of the caveman. Despite this fact,
today's homes still need improvements to make them completely weather proof. This is where
weatherstripping comes in. You may not think that the tiny unsealed crevices that exist even when your windows are closed is a big deal, but it definitely can make a huge difference in many ways. If you had a four to six inch hole in your wall you would do something about it wouldn’t you? Well, ill fitting windows with no weatherstripping to seal them up tight can be equivalent to the four to six inch hole in the wall.
Weatherstripping is the practice of sealing openings such as windows from possible home damaging elements like wind and rain. Weatherstripping effectively keeps water or wind from entering your home by completely blocking it or rerouting it away from the window.
Weatherstripping also has the added advantage of saving on energy costs on heating and air, by keeping it inside and not allowing it to escape through poor window seals. It also eases the strain on your heater or air conditioner, effectively extending their useable lifespan. Studies have shown that households can save up to 15 - 30% of their energy costs with the proper weatherstripping,
not to mention the savings cost of heaters and air
conditioners that last longer and will not need to be replaced
for ages.
If you feel wind coming though a closed window on a windy day, this is proof positive that you need weatherstripping. If you are still unsure try this: Go outside with a hairdryer, turn it on and run it along the edges of the window. Have a helper on the inside move their hands as you move the hairdryer feeling for where the hot air is leaking through the window and pinpointing the exact location of the leak. It is not uncommon to find that three of the four edges of a window are sealed properly, but that fourth edge is totally unsealed. Whether or not this is the case, most will probably conclude that after checking their entire home’s stock of windows,
this process would help immensely.
Whether you have wood double hung windows, wood casements, steel casements, aluminum windows, vinyl windows, or any other type of windows, let them help to lower your energy bills and keep the elements out, making your home the comfortable shelter is was intended to be. |
