Wood Windows
Can Be Beautiful Again
We all know that
wood windows can be an annoying problem. They have been on your house for decades upon decades, and have lasted from owner to owner, on down the line. Sure, they rattle terribly with a strong gust of wind, are absolutely encrusted with thick house paint and have locking mechanisms that have shifted over the years and don’t quite line up properly – all contributing factors that make it a serious task just to open them, keep them open if you eventually do, and then if they don’t slam shut on their own, to close them as well.
We know how tempting it is… to replace your old wood windows that give you such a hard time, with brand new efficient modern replacements. But despite all the problems that the old wood windows give you, it’s hard to get rid of them. They lend the house with a certain charm that sterile replacements could only dream of having. This is because the architects that originally designed and built your house paid special attention to the windows. They made sure that the trim and sash profiles matched the overall design element of the entire house in an effort to achieve a cohesive, aesthetically pleasing whole.
The window craftsmen built your windows with
an artisans touch. They started with dense lumber that was cut
from great forests from the ancient past. They used this wood
to ensure that the windows would be durable enough to last
lifetimes. In reflecting on the time and effort put into building these windows, and the irreplaceable, priceless source of the materials, it almost seems like an absolute crime to replace
them. Don’t do it.
Window Restoration & Repair do just what their name obviously hints at – they restore and repair old wood windows. There are many advantages to restoring and repairing wood windows instead of outright replacing them. First of all, as previously mentioned above, on a purely aesthetic level, they were designed specifically for your house and intended to complete the look of it. This is very important, especially if you have a home that is considered ‘historic’. Second of all is cost. Replacing all the windows of your house is a seriously expensive undertaking. Rather, they can be preserved at a fraction of the cost of replacing them. Keeping your wood windows will keep your house looking original and historic, and then restoring and repairing them will save you loads of cash over replacing them with an inferior product.
Yes that’s right, modern replacements are far inferior to
your originals. In fact, a wooden window when restored and
repaired is vastly superior to a replacement. It functions just as well, if not better, and
is just as energy
efficient. Couple that with the fact that it keeps your house
looking original and costs much less, gives it a ridiculous
edge, almost an unfair advantage, to replacements.
Replacements are made with cheap plastic parts and springs and strings that will eventually wear out. The double pane laminate glass that they deem to be so energy efficient will eventually fail and cloud up, giving you no other choice then to replace your replacements – again and again, over and over. Just give your
current ones a little TLC and you will be happier with them for decades to come. |
